Overview
Gandhara: Pakistan’s Ancient Buddhist Heartland
Gandhara was an ancient region in northern Pakistan—covering Taxila, Peshawar, and Swat—that became a major center of Buddhism over 2,000 years ago. It played a vital role in the spread of Buddhist art, culture, and learning across Asia.
This region gave rise to the famous Gandhara Art, blending Greek and Indian styles. Some of the earliest and most detailed Buddha sculptures were created here, along with magnificent monasteries, stupas, and universities.
Key Sites Along the Gandhara Trail
Taxila (UNESCO site): Ancient city ruins, Dharmarajika Stupa, Jaulian Monastery
Takht-i-Bahi (Mardan): One of the best-preserved Buddhist monastic sites
Swat Valley (Uddiyana): Home to ancient rock carvings, stupas, and statues
Though Buddhism is no longer widely practiced in Pakistan, Gandhara’s legacy endures. Restoration efforts continue to protect this heritage for both locals and global visitors.
